Club Sports to add three teams this fall

The new men’s and women’s disc golf teams will practice on Liberty University’s new 18-hole course.

The boom of Liberty University Club Sports continues as men’s racquetball and men’s and women’s disc golf programs are set to begin this fall.

These programs bring the total number of Club Sports teams to 29 — 17 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams.

“These new sports are going to be great additions to our department,” said Director of Club Sports Kirk Handy. “It is exciting to see how rapidly our department has been able to grow.”

The Club Sports program began in 2007 with six teams and about 90 student-athletes, Handy said. With the new teams next year, there will be 400 student-athletes.

The disc golf teams will use a new 18-hole disc golf course on 30 acres of Liberty-owned land across U.S. 460 from main campus. The course opened in Fall 2010.

The new men’s racquetball club sports team will practice and compete on the five racquetball courts at The Sports Racket in Lynchburg.

The men’s racquetball team will train and compete at The Sports Racket, a Lynchburg, Va., tennis facility donated to Liberty earlier this year. The Sports Racket is about a 15-minute drive from Liberty’s campus.

Charles Billingsley, a Christian music artist and worship pastor at Thomas Road Baptist Church, will assist the racquetball team in its first year. Billingsley is also well known in the Lynchburg racquetball community, ranking as the No. 1 player in the city’s only racquetball club.

“The thing I’ve always wanted to do was put together a club team,” Billingsley said. “Schools like the University of Virginia have them. It’s a great sport for students to get involved in. It’s one of the best sports in the world.”

  • An information session about the racquetball team will be held at LaHaye Ice Center in the Club Sports Conference Room at 3:30 p.m. May 3.
