Liberty University prepares for Hurricane Florence

Liberty University continues to closely monitor weather conditions and forecasts associated with the imminent landfall of Hurricane Florence along the Carolina Coast, some 220 miles from Lynchburg.

Historically Liberty University has been among one of the safest places to be during storms.  Due to our geographical location, topographical characteristics, and our building infrastructure, Liberty University has served as a shelter from natural disasters to the surrounding community.  Because of this, we will not be closing our campus as we want to continue to be a safe harbor for our students and our community.

During previous storms, Liberty has had the capabilities to continue basic operations with its power support system, food services, and other essentials.

Due to the fact that The Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Lynchburg have each declared a State of Emergency, Liberty University will be cancelling classes starting Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The university will not resume classes until Monday morning.  As the safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff is always of the utmost importance, we encourage all to seek shelter during the duration of the storm.

Liberty has activated its All Hazard Incident Response Plan and remains in close communication with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, as well as the Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services.

As this forecast continues to take shape and solidify over the next couple days, Liberty University will communicate with students, faculty and staff through the university’s emergency alert system, the LUPD Emergency Information Portal, the LUPD Twitter feed @LibertyUPolice, Liberty University social media, and the Liberty University news page, Liberty.edu/News.
