UPDATE: Recent graduate Mickey DeMorat finishes U.S. Open tied for 56th place

Recent Liberty University graduate Mickey DeMorat wrapped up his professional debut on Sunday, finishing tied for 56th place at the 118th U.S. Open.

DeMorat finished the four-day event, annually known as the toughest test of golf in the world, carding a 17-over par 297 (72-72-80-73) on the Shinnecock Hills Golf Course (par 70, 7,440 yards).

DeMorat made the cut in his first professional event after carding back-to-back 2-over par rounds of 72 on Thursday and Friday. Following the first 36 holes of play, DeMorat was tied for 14th place. He parred eight of the first nine holes he played on Saturday, marking the turn at 5-over par and still in the top-20 of the major championship leaderboard. The three-time All-Big South golfer rebounded on Sunday, closing his first professional event with a 3-over par 73.

For the week, DeMorat ranked tied for 52nd in the field in greens in regulation (39-of-72) and tied for 53rd place in fairways hit (37-of-56).

DeMorat finished off his senior year last month, posting a 72.00 season stroke average, while recording four top-10 finishes and a team best three top-five finishes. The senior finished his Liberty career with a 72.28 stroke average, the second-best mark in program history.

Former Flames golfer makes second-round cut at first U.S. Open

(Photo by Andrew Snyder)Competing in his first professional golf tournament, recent Liberty University graduate Mickey DeMorat finished Friday’s second round at the 118th U.S. Open in a 12-way tie for 14th place in the 156-player field, easily making the 67-player cut for this weekend’s final two rounds of the PGA Tour event at Shinnecock Hills (N.Y.) Golf Course.

For the second consecutive day, DeMorat shot a 2-over-par 72, matching his stroke average from his senior season at Liberty. At 4-over 144, he trails top-ranked Dustin Johnson, who is seeking his second U.S. Open title in three years, by 8 strokes, but leads five of the top 10 players in the current world rankings and is tied with second-ranked Justin Thomas.

After celebrating his 23rd birthday by carding four birdies in Thursday’s opening round, the Merritt Island, Fla., native started Friday’s play on No. 10 and posted two bogeys and two birdies on his first four holes before finishing the back nine with five straight pars. He remained at even-par until bogeying two of his last three holes.

DeMorat will tee off at 1:09 p.m. for Saturday’s third round along with Scotland’s Russell Knox, who is also tied for 14th. Third-round TV coverage, provided by Fox, starts at 11 a.m., while a live stream of the broadcast will be available on USOpen.com.


ESPN preview ranks DeMorat in top half of U.S. Open field

Mickey DeMorat, who played on the Liberty University golf team before graduating in May, turned professional after qualifying for this week’s U.S. Open. He has been projected by ESPN as the 71st best player in the field of 156 golfers for his professional debut.

The 118th annual tournament, which starts Thursday at Shinnecock Hills (N.Y.) Golf Club, is one of four major events on the PGA Tour. DeMorat is scheduled to tee off at 8:57 a.m. He must be in the top 60 players after Friday’s second round of 18 holes to make the cut for Saturday’s and Sunday’s final two rounds.


Flames golfer becomes first to qualify for U.S. Open

Recent Liberty University graduate Mickey DeMorat became the first Flames golfer ever to qualify for the U.S. Open, one of four major tournaments on the PGA Tour set for June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

He carded a 3-under-par 141 (70-71) during Maryland sectional qualifying on Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., before securing the fourth and final U.S. Open bid by winning a three-way playoff for fourth place in the 53-man field.

DeMorat, who graduated in May with the second-best career stroke average in program history (72.28), joined sophomore Ervin Chang on the All-Big South Conference first team and PING All-Region team after recording four top-10 finishes and a team-best three top-five finishes in his senior season.

The native of Merritt Island, Fla., previously posted a 7-under 209 for a runner-up finish at the Big South Men’s Golf Championship and a 4-under 209 to conclude his career by tying for 16th place at the NCAA Regional in Raleigh, N.C.
