UPDATE: Men’s lacrosse upsets Concordia in MCLA opener

Liberty University’s men’s lacrosse team, seeded ninth in its first MCLA Division I National Championship tournament, overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to upset No. 8-seeded Concordia (Calif.) University, 11-7, Monday night at the Salt Lake City Regional Athletic Complex.

Sophomore attack Derrick Esh and junior midfielder Chase Wright each scored three goals and junior goalie Brayden Harriman made 11 saves to lead the Flames (9-5) over the defending MCLA Division II national champion Eagles (12-3). Liberty advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinal matchup against top-seeded Chapman (Calif.) University (12-0), the 2016 DI national champion and 2017 runner-up. The 6 p.m. (EST) contest will be webcast live on MCLA.us.

Men’s lacrosse team competing in first MCLA Division I tournament

Liberty University’s men’s lacrosse team, which upset three nationally-ranked teams to earn its highest MCLA Division I national ranking in school history this season, is gearing up for its first appearance in the MCLA Division I National Championships in Salt Lake City.

The Flames (8-5, seeded ninth) are decided underdogs in the 16-team tournament, even as they open play Monday at 7:15 p.m. (MST) against No. 8-seeded Concordia (Calif.) University (12-2). The defending MCLA Division II national champion Eagles’ only two losses came against top-seeded Chapman (Calif.) University, the 2016 national champion and 2017 runner-up.

“We’ve got a lot of respect for Concordia,” Liberty Head Coach Kyle McQuillan said. “They do a lot of things really, really well and don’t make a lot of mistakes. We don’t expect a blowout in either direction, so we’re just hoping to keep it close and capitalize on as many opportunities as we can.”

Liberty and Condordia are two of only three teams in the field making their first trip to nationals, along with fifth-seeded South Carolina (16-1), which eliminated the Flames in the SELC Tournament semifinals.
