TV host Harris Faulkner tells students to find their squads, reflect integrity

Fox News anchor and Emmy Award-winner Harris Faulkner shared with Liberty University students and nearly 2,000 College For A Weekend guests in Friday’s Convocation her rules of engagement in dealing with adversity.

Vice President for Spiritual Development David Nasser introduced Faulkner, calling her “a voice for truth and a strong sister in Christ.”

Faulkner co-hosts “Outnumbered” on Fox News Channel and is the host of “Outnumbered Overtime.” She is also the author of the upcoming book “9 Rules of Engagement,” which shares wisdom Faulkner learned by watching her father’s military career.

Using the military imagery from her book, Faulkner asked students to consider who their “special forces” were, people that Faulkner said “watch your six” when life gets tough.

“These are true believers of yours,” she said. “These are the people who help you press against the doubt.”

Even Jesus had a problem with finding the right people for his inner circle, Faulkner noted, pointing out how he was betrayed by Judas and watched His disciples fall asleep at the Garden of Gethsemane.

“If picking an inner squad was hard for Jesus, then how hard is it going to be for us?” Faulkner asked. “If it didn’t work out for him, then we have to be extra careful and particular.”

Growing up, Faulkner lived on a U.S. Army base in Atlanta, Ga. where she learned the importance of having a reliable core team from hearing about her father’s role leading missions as a combat pilot.

“You don’t take 55 people with you,” she said. “You only take six or eight, and everyone has a job or a purpose. When someone exits, you are trained to fill in, but you’re going to miss that person.”

Faulkner said in these relationships, people fill a purpose, bringing something to the table that no one else can. She encouraged students to consider their purpose.

“If you feel like you haven’t figured it out, then I’m glad you’re here,” she said. “Liberty will put you to work in all the right ways. But you need people around you in smaller sets to work it out with you as well.”

Faulkner recruited 10 Liberty students to be part of her squad, inviting them on stage as a demonstration. She asked them all questions about the values they cherish in close friendships, such as honesty and devotion to God. Each of the students was given a “Team Faulkner” T-shirt.

Faulkner also encouraged the crowd to unleash their integrity, to be kind to others in order to “show our light.” To do this, that means putting our phones down and interacting with the world around you.

“I guarantee you there is nothing online right now that can replace your ability to look at one another and say, ‘I believe in you,’” she said.

In closing, Faulkner urged students to not doubt themselves and to trust in God’s purpose.

“Life is not going to be perfect,” she said. “Sometimes when we are strong in our beliefs, it feels like the world is pushing against us. You are enough. You know why? Because you have God’s light in you.”
