Chronicles of Narnia producer meets with theater students

Douglas Gresham, a producer of The Chronicles of Narnia films and the stepson of C.S. Lewis, continued his visit at Liberty University Tuesday afternoon as he held a question-and-answer session with a theater class in the Tower Theater, followed by a dessert reception in the theater lobby, which gave students the opportunity to meet him personally.

Gresham was introduced by Linda Nell Cooper, chair of Liberty’s Theatre Arts Department. Gresham and Cooper sat on stage as students in the audience asked Gresham questions about the film industry, his relationships with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, how the Narnia books were translated into films and the series’ ability to lead people to Christ, and his career and faith.

He was greeted enthusiastically by students who lined the lobby at the reception, waiting for a chance to shake his hand, snap a photo or ask another question.

“The more I walk around this university, the more people I meet here, the more impressed I’ve become by it. It’s probably becoming my favorite of all the universities I’ve worked at and taught in and preached in here in America, and there have been a lot of them,” said Gresham. “I’m thrilled to be here, honored to be here.”

When asked what his favorite thing about his visit was, he replied that he had only been at Liberty for two days, so it was too soon to choose.

“I loved the convocation, I enjoyed that enormously, but I enjoy the interaction with the students here who seem to be so articulate and so intelligent that they’re rather frightening, a little bit,” he joked. “You’re the next generation of me in some respects — it’s scary, you know. I think it’s a great institution, I hope I come back someday.”

  • Gresham spoke in Monday’s convocation (watch the service here.) He has also spoken to a variety of classes, from Film & TV History (he spent many years in broadcasting). On Thursday he concludes his visit with a talk to a philosophy class and a Christian Poetics class. In addition to meeting with theater students, he has also spoken in a faculty convocation and participated in a speaker’s forum at Liberty University School of Law.
