Liberty students serve medical professionals in Togo during mission trip

A team of eight Liberty University School of Nursing and Department of Biology & Chemistry students, along with two faculty members, spent their New Year’s a little differently by serving alongside the Togolese people to broaden their medical knowledge while being the hands and feet of Jesus.

The team left on Dec. 29 for the monthlong trip to Togo, Africa, where they partnered with missionaries from the Association of Baptist World Evangelism (ABWE) International, along with Samaritan’s Purse medical teams at Hospital Baptiste Biblique in Adeta, Togo. They will return early next week.

“Our students were able to work and observe in all areas of the Southern Hospital, such as maternity, medical intensive care, pediatric, surgery in the operation room, and pharmacy,” School of Nursing Instructor Catherine Raj said. “Working alongside and learning from both the American and Togolese medical professionals have been rich and rewarding experiences.”

This week, the group will visit ABWE’s Village of Light School, which specializes in educating and training visually impaired children and young adults and teaching them a trade.

Raj said that though the team is focused on medical outreach, they have been able to glean from ministries that are working to bring Christ to the people of Togo through Bible studies, economics classes, and medical clinics for HIV and AIDS patients.

“We are humbled to be a very small part of this medical work and to be an encouragement to the missionaries serving in Togo — changing hearts and lives for His glory,” Raj said.

This is just one of several outreach trips available to Liberty students interested in medical missions overseas. Nursing students and student-doctors from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine have made annual trips to Guatemala. This March, nursing students will travel to Kenya to The Jesse Kay Happy Life Children’s Home to focus on pediatric medical missions. A team will also be dispatched to Rwanda.
