Liberty mourns passing of former Flames Football Head Coach Tom Dowling

Liberty University is mourning the loss of former Flames Football Head Coach Tom Dowling, 77, who died Sunday following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dowling served as Liberty’s third head football coach from 1977-83, going 33-38-2, making him the fourth winningest head coach in program history. The Springfield, Ky., native guided the Flames to a 9-1-1 record in 1979, marking the second-highest season win total in program history. He helped Liberty rise up the collegiate ranks during his seven seasons at the helm, moving from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II level as an associate member in 1980 before the program gained full status as an NCAA Division II program in 1981.

Dowling is survived by Mary Ann Garnett Dowling, his wife of 56 years. He will be remembered at a funeral service on Thursday at 10 a.m., at the John L. Hill Chapel on the campus of Georgetown College, his alma mater in Georgetown, Ky.
