Habitat for Humanity chapter meets goal with help from Liberty Dining

Sodexo District Manager Anthony Delligatti and Sodexo staff member Patricia Carwiel delivered the donation to Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Donna Vincent (middle). The money will be used by Liberty’s chapter to build a house next semester.

Liberty University Dining Services demonstrated its dedication to give back to the greater Lynchburg community with a recent donation of $5,000 to Liberty’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The money came from donations raised at this year’s weekly Food Truck Round-up, which is held on Thursdays throughout the semester in the parking lot at Doc’s Diner, and the annual craft fair, which occurred last Saturday at the LaHaye Event Space.

Liberty’s Habitat for Humanity chapter has been raising money to build a house for a local family. This donation brought their total to $42,000, helping them to meet their goal. The first Liberty house was completed in October 2015.

“Sodexo (Liberty’s dining partner) has been instrumental in our fundraising process, and we wouldn’t be near our goal without them,” chapter advisor and College of General Studies instructor Alison Pettit said.  “We are very excited to start building the next LU house with Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity, and we hope to break ground in the spring.”

Sodexo District Manager Anthony Delligatti said the dining services provider decided to give to the Liberty chapter after hearing of their need. He said they have an ongoing partnership with the chapter and that students involved have volunteered to work concessions at football games, with a percentage of the sales being donated to the chapter.

This is one of many ways Liberty Dining has given back to the community throughout the year. During the 2016-17 academic year, Sodexo donated food and more than $6,500 to nonprofits in the Lynchburg area. Vendor fees from Sodexo sponsored craft fairs, and community markets were donated to Miriam’s House, a local organization that serves homeless women and their children. During Sodexo’s annual Fall Food Drive, 2,371 pounds of food were given to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Leftover food from catering events during the year were also donated catering to Lynchburg Daily Bread.

During last weekend’s craft fair, donations were also collected for Lynchburg Daily Bread. About $200 and 150 pounds of nonperishable food items were donated.

“Sodexo is part of the community, and we want to give back to the residents of Lynchburg any way we can, whether it’s providing a meal or helping build a home for those who are in need,” Delligatti said. “Because Liberty is a service- and outreach-minded university, we want to make sure we follow those same principles.”
