Kirwa set for NCAA Cross Country Championship

Liberty University junior Azaria Kirwa will make his NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship debut in Saturday’s men’s 10K final, set to start at 11:45 a.m. in Louisville, Ky.

Kirwa previously qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June, when he placed 22nd in the men’s 5,000-meter final.

He is the first Liberty men’s runner to qualify for this meet since 2010, when Sam Chelanga claimed his second national title and Evans Kigen finished 31st in Terre Haute, Ind.

Kirwa, who like Chelanga is a native of Kenya, advanced to Louisville as an individual qualifier by placing third at the Nov. 10 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships with a 10K personal-best time of 28:57.0.

He will be Liberty’s only representative in a race featuring 31 complete teams and 38 individual runners who all placed in the top 25 of their respective regions.

Saturday’s championship race will be webcast live with a paid subscription. Fans can also view live results posted online.
