‘Guys & Dolls’ brings audiences on a colorful adventure

Liberty University’s Department of Theatre Arts opens “Guys & Dolls” on the Tower Theater stage, turning back the clock for a golden-era adventure that travels from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana. The classic musical will be shown eight times from Dec. 2-11.

“Audiences can expect a fun, entertaining story with heart and plenty of memorable tunes,” said Andy Geffken, an assistant professor of theatre arts and the play’s director. “This story has been bringing people joy since the ’50s; the humor and appeal still resonates with people today, and most people will leave this production feeling a little bit closer to the charm and swagger of Sinatra while wanting to be in love in time for the holidays.”

Filled with colorful characters, a bright score, and oddball romance, “Guys & Dolls” is considered by many to be a celebration of American musical theatre. Based on stories written by Damon Runyon, an American newspaperman and short story writer, his characters come alive in 1950s New York. It follows the story of an unlikely pairing of guys and “dolls” from the lights of Broadway to the streets of Havana, Cuba, where a professional gambler accidentally falls in love with a pious humanitarian.

“Though this show is light-hearted, it reflects the warmth and humor of Damon Runyon’s radio drama from the 1930s, telling stories of lovable criminals based on the men and women Runyon interacted with in and around Broadway,” Geffken said. “Central conflicts revolve around our perception of others and how sometimes we need a different perspective to find our way to truth.”

“Guys & Dolls” has nearly 60 students involved in its production, with 20 making their Liberty debut in either the cast or crew. The lead roles will be played by junior Brodie Robinson as Sky Masterson, sophomore Maria Reginaldi as Sarah Brown, junior Sarah Jirgal as Adelaide, and junior Ryan Hippe as Nathan Detroit. All four are taking on their largest assignments to date in a musical at Liberty.
