Comedians Tim Hawkins and Bob Smiley share the gift of laughter

Laughter erupted throughout the Vines Center as comedians Tim Hawkins and Bob Smiley shared humorous anecdotes with Liberty University students and more than 1,300 College For A Weekend (CFAW) guests during Convocation on Friday.

Hawkins, a nationally renowned comedian, sells out over 100 of his shows per year. He has more than half a million Facebook fans and over 300 million online video views. Hawkins and Smiley will perform at Thomas Road Baptist Church tonight at 7 p.m. The show will be recorded live for Hawkins’ upcoming DVD.

During the Convocation performance, Hawkins sang satirical songs and interacted with the audience, delivering punch line after punch line.

Before Hawkins took the stage, Smiley shared light-hearted stories about his children.

Smiley has been a comedian for more than 10 years. He has opened for Christian groups such as Newsboys, MercyMe, Third Day, Switchfoot, TobyMac, and Audio Adrenaline.

Smiley recalled a time when his son wanted to play the trombone. Although his son was not very good, Smiley was proud of him — just as God always loves His children, no matter what they do.

“Many of you came in here today, and you have not been playing your song the way God wanted you to play it,” he said. “Here is the best news that I can give this morning: it does not matter. Your perfect Father, who created you, is never going to turn His back on you. He is never going to stop loving you. It is true, unconditional love.”

Smiley told the Convocation crowd that he wants to use his stand-up comedy to remind people that God has given them a path.

“God has given you a ministry in your life, and you have to start looking for those opportunities,” he said.

The Convocation was a  highlight for CFAW guests, which included high school students, parents, and youth pastors. During the weekend, they will also sample campus life as they enjoy the Vertical Church Band live in concert Friday at 8 p.m. in the LaHaye Event Space, view the Virginia premiere of the “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at the Tower Theater, and cheer on the Liberty Flames Footall team at Williams Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. CFAW is held twice a semester.
