Hockey player wins Rookie of the Year honor

Liberty University’s men’s club hockey team continues to make a splash in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Liberty forward Brent Boschman was recently named ACHA’s Division I Rookie-of-the-Year and teammates Dave Semenyna and Kyle Dodgson received First Team ACHA All-American honors for the 2009-10 season.

Boschman, a sport management major from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, played left-wing as a freshman and scored 37 goals, the highest amount in the ACHA this year. This is the first time a Liberty hockey player has received the Rookie-of-the-Year award, which is selected by head coaches in the ACHA Division I.

“Brent probably is one of the most offensively talented players that we have ever had at Liberty,” head coach Kirk Handy said. “He has a nose for the net. He scored the most goals in one season Liberty hockey history.”

Scoring goals runs in the Boschman family, as Brent’s father, Laurie, played in the National Hockey League from 1979 to 1993. Read more about Brent at the ACHA website.

Seniors Semenyna and Dodgson were standouts on Liberty’s defense and offense, respectively. Dodgson led the ACHA in points and assists this season. This was Semenyna’s fourth All-American honor. To view their individual rankings, click here.

Liberty was 29-3 overall this season and received a bid to the national tournament (ranked No. 6) for the fourth consecutive year. The Flames were a national semi-finalist in 2008.
