Liberty Athletics wins third-straight Sasser Cup

Liberty’s Director of Athletics Jeff Barber, right, holds the 2009-10 Big South Sasser Cup. Liberty’s Senior Woman Administrator Meredith Eaker, left, holds the Women’s All-Sport Trophy.

For the third year in a row, Liberty has received the top honor in the Big South Conference. The Big South Sasser Cup title was awarded during the annual Spring Meetings and Hall of Fame Banquet Dinner on Thursday in High Point, N.C.

The award is given annually to the top performing athletics department in the conference during each academic year. Liberty has captured the award eight times during the last 13 athletics seasons.

Additionally, Liberty also won the Women’s All-Sport Trophy for the second time in three years. Liberty finished second in the Men’s All-Sport Trophy standings, an honor the program has captured four out of the previous six seasons.

Liberty averaged 11.75 Sasser Cup points in 17 championship sports and accumulated a total of 199.75 points based on its finish in conference championships, winning by 0.47 points over second-place Coastal Carolina (11.28 average).

Liberty’s athletics teams claimed eight Big South team titles in 2009-10, winning league championships in football and women’s basketball, plus the Big South’s first-ever sweep of the six running championships (men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field).

“Liberty University is proud to be part of the Big South Conference and our entire university community is proud of what Liberty University Athletics has accomplished under the leadership of our Athletics Director, Jeff Barber. Liberty’s student athletes and coaches represent this university and its unique mission exceptionally well,” said Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.
