Law Moot Court Team ranked among nation’s top 10

Liberty University School of Law's 2015-16 Moot Court Team.

Liberty University School of Law’s Moot Court Team has finished its season ranked No. 9 in the nation, qualifying for the 2017 Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship, presented by the University of Houston Law Center.

Throughout the year, teams accumulate points at various tournaments, hoping to qualify for the next season’s national tournament where the top 16 teams will face off. Liberty’s 2015-16 team is made up of 17 members who participate in various tournaments across the country, competing in groups of two or three.

Last season, Liberty qualified for the national championship for the first time with an 11th place finish, then went on to reach the national semifinals, held in Houston, Jan. 28-30.

Despite competing in the fewest tournaments of any of this year’s top 16 teams, Liberty eclipsed the top 10 for the first time after earning points from a number of prestigious tournaments. Liberty’s semifinal finish in January’s nationals started the season strong, and the team went on to win two regional championships at the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition. Liberty earned a quarter-finalist finish at the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition national finals, a second place finish at the Leroy R. Hassell National Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition, and two semi-finalist finishes at the Billings Exum and Frye National Moot Court Competition. Liberty also earned points for having two individual best oralist awards — second year law student Whitney Rutherford (winning top honors at the Hassell Completition) and third year law student Justin Reddington (winning the award at the Southern Illinois University National Health Law Tournament).

“Our teams have worked extremely hard to earn this honor,” said Scott Thompson, director of the Center for Lawyering Skills and faculty advisor to the Moot Court Board. “Our success, given the size of our student body, is astounding. Prior to and throughout each tournament our competitors give God the glory for whatever He accomplishes thorough us, and He has been very gracious in giving us this platform.”
