Liberty alumnus receives Teacher of the Year award

Liberty University alumnus Kenneth Burrows Jr. (’10) was presented with the Lynchburg City Schools’ Teacher of the Year award Monday, Apr. 18, at Heritage Elementary School.

Burrows, a native of the Bahamas, has been teaching at Heritage Elementary for five years as an English language learning instructor. He frequently uses dance – including break-dancing — and rap to engage his students, and in the last four years, the test score rates in his classes have increased from 30 to 80 percent.

“Receiving this award means that I have truly lived a life of servanthood as an educator,” Burrows said. “It also exemplifies my attempt to become all things to all people, particularly children.”

Burrows said that his professors at Liberty taught him to be the teacher that he is today.

“My education at Liberty was crucial in receiving this award,” he said. “My instructors equipped me with superb linguistic skills, which enabled me to innovate the program I am involved in.”

Karen Parker, dean of Liberty’s School of Education, said she is proud of alumni like Burrows who are making a difference in the lives of their students.

“When graduates of our program are recognized as outstanding teachers by their colleagues,” said Parker, “it is a validation of the thorough preparation they have received and their commitment to their students.”

In 2013, Liberty alumna Jennifer Lovett (’02) also received Teacher of the Year honors for her work at Linkhorne Elementary School.
