UPDATE: Student artwork garners nine awards in regional ADDYs

Liberty University students from the Department of Studio & Digital Arts (SADA) received nine awards at the American Advertising Federation’s District 3 ADDY Awards, including the Student Best of Show. Judging took place on Tuesday, March 22, in Roanoke, Va., and awards were announced shortly thereafter.

Nine gold and 12 silver awards were presented in the collegiate portion of the competition, of which Liberty received four gold and four silver ADDYs. Entries were judged for creativity, originality, and strategy.

AAF District 3 represents clubs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Gold winners automatically have their work forwarded to the next round of competition, the national finals, which will take place June 7 at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif.

Art students claim most awards in local ADDYs

March 2, 2016

Liberty University students celebrate their ADDY Award achievements on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Liberty University students from the Department of Studio & Digital Arts (SADA) won more than 70 awards at the Western Virginia Student Advertising Awards competition this past Saturday in Roanoke, Va. Liberty’s 42 students brought home 22 gold and 49 silver “ADDY Awards,” as well as the Best of Student Work award. Overall, SADA students took home 71 of the 91 awards at the competition, including seven awards to four students from Liberty’s Master of Fine Arts program, which launched last year. Liberty outperformed students from Radford University, Lynchburg College, Virginia Tech, and other institutions in the region.

The American Advertising Awards, hosted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), is the industry’s largest competition worldwide, drawing over 40,000 entries annually. The ADDYs honor advertising in all forms of media, from the traditional design of print publications to digital design, including consumer apps. Competitions are held at local, district, and national levels.

Over the past five years Liberty has continuously improved its showings at the ADDYs, with 39 students winning 75 awards at the local level last year before going on to win the most student awards in the region. One student team went on to win silver at nationals, the second time a Liberty student placed at nationals in three years.

“While I’m no longer surprised by the accolades won by our creative students, I am always gratified that God has given us a tremendous faculty and wonderful resources with which to prepare the next generation of artists,” said Dr. Norman Mintle, dean of the School of Communication & Creative Arts (SCCA). “Our vision in the SCCA is to prepare our students academically, professionally, and spiritually. Winning more ADDY Awards demonstrates the effectiveness of our academic and professional efforts. As our students graduate and move into their calling, they leave Liberty filled with knowledge, experience, talent, and God’s rich blessings.”

Todd Smith added that having more students win awards than in any previous year speaks to “the overall breadth and excellence” of the work they submit.

“It also reflects the faculty/student mentoring paradigm that runs throughout the Studio & Digital Arts Department,” Smith said. “Our students reap the benefit of working with professors with years of real-world experience.”

Students who qualify for district judging (gold awards automatically advance and silver are eligible for submission) will learn the results after judging on March 25.
