Liberty students win state athletic training quiz bowl

Liberty’s VATA Quiz Bowl Team members.

A team of students from Liberty University’s Athletic Training Program (ATP) won the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (VATA) Quiz Bowl on Jan. 9, held at the VATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia in Williamsburg, Va.

The team claimed its first championship at the state level in only its second year participating in the VATA Quiz Bowl.

Liberty’s team was comprised of seniors Christopher “Dan” Brown, Kevin Macintyre, Joshua Valentine, and Tyler Amburgey. The team will continue on to the District 3 Athletic Training Quiz Bowl held in Virginia Beach on May 21 at the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting.

The “Jeopardy!”-style competition consisted of three rounds of questions related to athletic training. Liberty competed against other Virginia schools, including George Mason University, James Madison University, Bridgewater College, Radford University, Longwood University, Lynchburg College, and Averett University.

Dr. Matthew Gage, Liberty’s ATP director and president of the VATA said that competitions like the quiz bowl help to assess the overall effectiveness of Liberty’s program as well as give it recognition on a large stage.

“Based on our students’ success, we are doing well right now,” he said. “This whole process brings a lot of recognition to our program on how well our students are doing compared with other programs across the state because Virginia has many great athletic training programs. Demonstrating that Liberty is one of them is a great accomplishment.”

Liberty’s Athletic Training Program is part of the Department of Health Professions. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education and gives students the opportunity to work alongside clinical preceptors who work in a variety of clinical settings, including collegiate athletics programs, local schools, and general medical clinics. Upon completion of the ATP, Liberty graduates are eligible to take the national Board of Certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer. Liberty had an 89 percent pass rate among first-time exam takers last year.
