Liberty University’s Department of Theatre Arts is bringing one of Shakespeare’s popular comedies to the stage with its production of “Twelfth Night.” The performance runs Oct. 30-Nov. 8 at the Tower Theater.

After a shipwreck separates a twin brother and sister — leaving each assuming the other is dead — a deceitful disguise leads to a humorous love triangle and a case of mistaken identity, as the siblings unknowingly seek love and fortune in the same kingdom.

“Twelfth Night is a comedy in the purest sense,” said Neal Brasher, assistant professor of theatre arts and “Twelfth Night” director. “It is frivolous, lighthearted, and entertaining. The characters are, at once, terribly silly and undeniably human.”

Brasher added that the costumes are not specific to a particular period, reinforcing the play’s look at the universal human condition.

“(This show) is an invitation to the audience to laugh at the characters and themselves.”

Music is a key thematic device in this performance, as is common in Shakespeare comedies.

The story is brought to life by a cast of 12 Liberty students, supported by 13 crewmembers. Many of the performers had not attempted Shakespeare on the stage before this production.

“’Twelfth Night’ is one of Shakespeare’s most well-known comedies,” Brasher said. “It is often used by English professors to introduce students to Elizabethan comedy. … This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce young actors to Shakespeare … it has been a privilege for me to introduce them.”
