Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli speaks at town hall meeting

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli spoke today at a town hall meeting in the Liberty University School of Law’s Supreme Courtroom. The event was sponsored by the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, and by engineering and surveying firm Hurt & Proffitt.

The event was originally scheduled to take place at Hurt & Proffitt’s office, but once more than 60 attendance requests were received, Liberty offered its replica of the U.S. Supreme Courtroom — the only one in existence — as the venue.

Mat Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law, talks with Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Cuccinelli’s 90-minute address provided information on the workings of his office. The biggest points of interest were his lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency’s attempt to regulate greenhouse gases and his lawsuit against the new health care legislation and liberty.

Cuccinelli referred to his office as “reactionary,” a group that is largely motivated by the limiting of Americans’ freedom.

“Back in [President] Reagan’s era, people were educated about growing the ‘economic pie,’” said Cuccinelli. “But there’s another pie that I talk about, and that’s the ‘liberty pie.’ It doesn’t grow and it doesn’t shrink, and there are only two slices — the government’s and citizens’. Whenever the government’s power increases, citizens’ liberty decreases.”

He predicts that the 2012 presidential election will be one that makes history, and something that will help America “go back to [its] philosophical roots.”

This was not Cuccinelli’s first visit to Liberty. He attended an Attorney General Candidate Forum during his candidacy on Oct. 27, 2009. (Steve Shannon, the Democratic candidate for attorney general, declined the invitation to appear.)
