Student named among Air Force’s Outstanding Airmen of the Year

Senior Airman Mason Meherg

The United States Air Force named Liberty University student Senior Airman Mason Meherg of the Air Force Global Strike Command as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for 2015. This award honors the service’s top enlisted members. Nominees are selected based on leadership, job performance, and personal achievements.

Meherg was also named the Outstanding Airman of the Year by the Air Force Global Strike Command in April. He has been serving in the Air Force since 2012 and is currently stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

“We are so proud of Senior Airman Meherg for not only this commendation but for his exemplary service over the years,” said Emily Foutz, director of Liberty’s Office of Military Affairs. “It is such a privilege to serve him and our many dedicated service members and veterans who have given so much to serve our country.”

Meherg is currently in his second year studying business through Liberty’s online education program. He enrolled in Liberty after hearing about it from one of his former flight commanders, who was a Liberty ROTC graduate.

The opportunity to study through Liberty was especially meaningful to Meherg because he had previously passed on an opportunity to go to college. For him, Liberty was a second chance.

“My experience has been phenomenal,” he said, “from the instructor support all the way to the guys working in the front office. I would tell all veterans to take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded to them — they will definitely be glad to have that in their back pocket when the civilian world comes calling again.”

Liberty is a proud supporter of the military with over 30,000 military students around the globe, including active service members, discharged and retired veterans, and the military spouses who support them. Last fall, the university was recognized in the Best for Vets listing of military friendly schools by Military Times Edge. For the second year in a row, Liberty was also ranked No. 6 among colleges offering online and nontraditional programs.

Through Liberty’s Office of Military Affairs, service members and veterans have access to tuition discounts, fee waivers, book vouchers, as well as family resources and student care.
