Liberty University hosts legislative breakfast

Virginia Sen. Steve Newman speaks during the Pancakes & Politics Breakfast Series event hosted by Liberty University.

Liberty University School of Law and the Helms School of Government hosted the Pancakes & Politics Breakfast Series, presented by the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, on Tuesday morning in the Hancock Welcome Center.

Featured legislators were Virginia Sen. Steve Newman, Del. Kathy Byron, Del. Ben Cline, and Del. Scott Garrett. Attendees were greeted by Rena Lindevaldsen, interim dean of the School of Law, and by Ron Miller, associate dean of the Helms School of Government.

The breakfast takes place before the 2015 General Assembly session convenes on Jan. 14 and again in the spring as a wrap-up to the session. Liberty hosts the series every other year, rotating with Randolph College.

On Tuesday, legislators set forth goals for the upcoming General Assembly session and answered questions on how regional businesses could be affected. Topics discussed included reforms to the Affordable Care Act, educational objectives to meet workforce demands, right-to-work laws, and the reduction of government intervention in business.
