Classmates cheer on Flames Football team during Convocation

Liberty University Head Football Coach Turner Gill rallied the student crowd in Monday’s Convocation.

Before the main speaker was introduced at Monday’s final formal Convocation of the semester, Liberty University’s Senior Vice President for Spiritual Development David Nasser welcomed Flames Football Head Coach Turner Gill to the stage to recognize the team’s first-ever NCAA FCS playoff win over James Madison University, 26-21, Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

Gill recognized the players, who were seated together in the Vines Center, and used the opportunity to fire up Flames fans for this Saturday’s second-round game at No. 6-ranked Villanova University in Philadelphia.

“This team right here is truly battle tested,” Gill said. “They’ve shown a lot of great character throughout the football season and throughout the football games. This team here is hungry. We’re not done yet. Our team is ready to play their best football game in Philadelphia.”

Gill led the 10,000-plus students in a chant of “I believe.”

Members of the Flames Football team, who are preparing for an NCAA FCS second-round playoff game on Saturday, stand together during Monday’s Convocation in the Vines Center.

The university plans to send buses to Philadelphia for students to cheer on the Flames in action. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

After praise and worship led by YouthQuest, a Liberty ministry team, Christian comedian, best-selling author, and motivational speaker Ken Davis shared a mix of humor and biblical truths to help ease the stress of approaching finals. Davis reminded students of God’s eternal love regardless of success, riches, or past mistakes.

“Life in its fullest essence, the expression of our faith in the fullest essence — the ability for us to be everything that God created us to be — rests on this bottom line: full faith in God’s love for you,” Davis said.

Davis shared stories that painted a picture of God’s love. He recounted the day his daughter was born, looking into her eyes and realizing a fraction of the love God must feel for His children.

Christian author and motivational speaker Ken Davis talks passionately about God’s unconditional love for His children.

“She wrapped four little fingers around my little finger and wrapped her soul around my heart,” Davis said. “Throughout life, God gives us little glimpses of the bottom line, and that day I got a little glimpse of how God feels about me, how He feels about you.”

Davis also shared several humorous and heartfelt stories about his three young granddaughters that demonstrated the intensity of love. As the laughter quieted, Davis quoted Romans 8:35 and reminded students of the constant love of God in their lives. He told them that success should be attributed to God’s sacrifice, not our worldly abilities. Throughout each season of life, a strong faith in God’s love should be a constant foundation, he said, and despite past mistakes, God’s love is unfaltering and will cover any blemish.

“There’s nothing you can do today to make God love you more, and there’s nothing you can do to make Him love you less,” Davis said.

After Convocation, Davis met students and autographed his book “Fully Alive” that was available for purchase.
