Sport Management director to attend Oxford Round Table

Dr. Vicky Martin, chair of Liberty University’s Sport Management Department, has been invited to attend the Oxford Round Table at Hertford College at the University of Oxford in England, March 14-19, 2010.

The event, “Women in the Academy: Prospects and Promises,” consists of a small interdisciplinary group of scholars who have a particular interest in gender equity in the education establishment. The symposium will include discussions on the manifestations of discrimination in the university environment, factors affecting compensation, tenure and promotion, gender and the hierarchy of the institution, sexual harassment and consequences, implicit institutional restrain on women’s leadership and discriminatory rationalization of invisible ceilings.

“I feel this is a wonderful opportunity for women within a predominately male field in sport management,” Martin said.

Martin completed her doctoral dissertation on sexual harassment in the college setting with regard to student-athletes, so the event is of great interest to her.

“I feel that the topic is one that I am extremely interested in. It’s an opportunity to meet other professionals within my field and discuss opportunities for women in leadership positions within sport management and other disciplines.”
