Tim Clinton gives motivational talk at Monday convocation

Dr. Tim Clinton, president of the American Association of Christian Counselors and executive director of the Center for Counseling and Family Studies at Liberty University, gave a message on “changing your life” at Monday’s convocation in the Vines Center. His talk emphasized the “path of brokenness to the path of freedom.”

Clinton, who teaches counseling courses at LU, has written several books and journal articles on marriage and family counseling and has been invited to speak at conferences all over the country, including for Focus On The Family and the National Research Institute.

On Monday, Clinton explained the downward spiral that many people experience, at some point in their lives, from living in the light of Christ to turning toward addiction and idolatry. He said that as people lose heart due to various “assaults,” they become angry, anxious, alienated, arrogant and seek “aloneness.”

Eventually, Clinton said, people commit “adulteries of the heart,” that can result in abuse of drugs, alcohol and pornography. Some people can get to such a low point that they believe they are unworthy of God’s love.

“If you have any potential for Christ, hell will be against you,” Clinton said. “We may get to a place where we think God doesn’t want us.”

But, Clinton explained that by listening to the “small, still voice of God,” people begin to heal with the first-aid of God’s affection and can proceed to self-assessment, awareness, attachment and accountability.

“No matter what happens in our lives, God is still there,” Clinton said. “You can’t hide from Christ.”
