Demolition at old baseball stadium makes way for new projects

Demolition continued this week at the old baseball stadium. The new Liberty Baseball Stadium can be seen in the background.

Construction workers began tearing down the former baseball operations center at Liberty University on Monday, the final project in the demolition of Worthington Stadium, the former home of Flames Baseball.

The new Liberty Baseball Stadium, located near Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex and Williams Stadium (home of Liberty Football), opened in February.

As part of the university’s $500 million campus rebuilding project, the old site will be replaced with a new softball stadium and adjacent 1,472-space parking garage, according to Charles Spence, director of Planning & Construction.

“The demolition included the old field, dugouts, lighting, scoreboard, and now has culminated in the demolition of the old baseball operations center,” Spence said. “It’s the last thing to go in that area before we start reconstructing the new state-of-the-art softball stadium.”

The stadium is targeted to open next spring and will be built similar in style to the new baseball stadium.

“It will be very much like our new baseball stadium, as much as NCAA regulations will allow,” Spence said, noting the only major difference will be a dirt infield diamond. “It’s going to be fantastic. … It will have an artificial surface, a very nice expanded field with a new scoreboard, and new individual seating.”

  • Worthington Stadium opened in 1979 and was used for 33 seasons. It was named for Liberty’s first collegiate baseball coach, Al Worthington. He will visit Liberty with his wife, Shirley, this weekend for Homecoming. A ceremonial unveiling of the Worthington bust will be held at Liberty Baseball Stadium on Friday at 6:30 p.m. A tour of the new facility will precede the ceremony at 6 p.m. and a reception is planned in the press area at 7 p.m. On Saturday at 10 a.m., the new stadium will host an alumni baseball game.
