Liberty University Helms School of Government announces Major General Jason Q. Bohm as new dean

Liberty University welcomes United States Marine Corps Major General Jason Q. Bohm as the new dean of the Helms School of Government. He will begin his new role on July 1.

Major General Bohm enters academia after a successful career of military service. Most recently, he served as the Inspector General of the Marine Corps before retiring earlier this year after over 34 years of service to our country.

“I look forward to facilitating the success of Liberty’s faculty and staff in developing our students into Christ-centered men and women of honor and character, empowered with the values, knowledge, and skills essential for impacting the world,” Major General Bohm said. “I am excited for the opportunity to continue being a servant leader. As a Marine, I understand well the notion of placing mission and others first, and I cannot think of a more impactful mission than training and educating Champions for Christ as I grow and learn in my own spiritual journey as part of the Liberty University family.”

Among his professional highlights, Major General Bohm served as Chief of Staff for the Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO from 2018-20. While in this role, he supervised the planning and operations of NATO’s premier rapidly deployable Maritime Battle-staff, a multi-national headquarters responsible for integrating U.S. naval and amphibious forces into NATO’s Deterrence and Defense operations throughout the Euro Atlantic region. He has also served as Commanding General of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command (2020-22) and Marine Corps Training Command (2016-18).

In addition, he previously served as Director of the Marine Corps Legislative Liaison Office for the U.S. House of Representatives (2011-13) as well as Director of the Expeditionary Warfare School (2015-16). Before taking those positions, he worked as a strategic planner for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Major General Bohm fully embodies Liberty University’s mission of Training Champions for Christ who are dedicated to bettering the world around them. His impeccable leadership record will prove critical in preparing students in the Helms School of Government to enter careers in all levels of government, criminal justice, military, law, international relations, and beyond,” said Liberty President Dondi Costin, who is also a retired Major General, having served more than 32 years of commissioned service in the U.S. Air Force.

During his time in the Marines, Major General Bohm participated in Operations Restore Hope, Uphold Democracy, Fairwinds, Sea Signal, Unified Assistance, Iraqi Freedom, and Inherent Resolve, as well as an antiterrorism mission to Bahrain and a deployment in support of U.S. Support Group Haiti. He concluded his time of service with multiple personal decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legion of Merit medals, two Bronze Stars with combat distinguishing device, Joint Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Army Commendation Medal, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and two Combat Action Ribbons.

“Liberty University is honored to welcome Major General Bohm as our new dean for the Helms School of Government,” said Liberty Provost and Chief Academic Officer Scott Hicks. “He understands that our primary focus is on our students’ success, and he will be instrumental in equipping them to be effective leaders and ambassadors for Christ wherever God calls them.”

Major General Bohm holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration-Marketing from Illinois Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in Military Studies from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College at the National Defense University. He also received training in the Human Resources Executive Suite Connection Program at Harvard University, the Strategic Thinkers Program at Johns Hopkins University, and the Strategic Thinking Course at the University of Virginia.
