Liberty mourns passing of longtime history professor and chair Dr. Cline Hall

Dr. Cline Hall, who served for 34 years as a professor and administrator in Liberty University’s Department of History, passed away on Oct. 19 at the age of 83.

Beginning at Liberty in 1977, Hall faithfully led students and staff in multiple roles, including that of chairman of the History Department for 18 years, co-director of Liberty’s Civil War Seminar held each spring, and member of the board of directors for the National Civil War Chaplains Museum, located on campus.

As a professor, Hall taught courses including Survey of American History II, American Colonial History, The Ante-Bellum South and The New South, Civil War and Reconstruction, and History of Immigration. He retired in 2011.

“Dr. Hall was our long-term chair and he laid an outstanding Christian foundation for the History Department,” said Dr. Roger Schultz, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. “He contributed to the formative years of the university, and he had such great insight and perspective. As much as he loved the university’s past, he and (his wife) Beverly were passionate about what the Lord would do at Liberty in the future.”

The Halls endowed a special chair of History that will benefit future generations of Liberty students.

The Halls have been longtime members of Thomas Road Baptist Church and served in both the choir and nursing home ministry. The couple also owned a Dairy Queen on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg, starting in 1991. They enjoyed traveling, having visited Greece, Israel, England, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, and Bahamas, as well as Haiti for a missionary trip.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at noon at Thomas Road Baptist Church, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m.
