Students participate in interactive language-learning experience for Global Focus Week

Students flocked to the first floor of the Montview Student Union on Thursday afternoon to take part in the ELIC Experience, one of the many interactive events offered during Liberty University’s semi-annual Global Focus Week.

The event was sponsored by ELIC, an organization that offers training for people who want to teach the English language in more than a dozen nations. Students had the opportunity to sample different cultural foods and learn more about different languages through lessons and art.

“What we do as an organization is send people to teach a language in settings where that language is being asked for,” said Chris Liberto, an ELIC representative. “I think a lot of people don’t think they are qualified to do this, but that is one of the reasons we wanted to create a small experience like this so we could show people how easy it is.”

ELIC was one of several organizations that sent representatives to campus for the week.

Through this fun experience, ELIC hopes to show college students the power that learning to teach the English language can have on the world.

“Teaching English is something that the world is kind of asking for right now,” Liberto said. “We, as an organization, hear of a need that we know we can train people to fill.”

Throughout the week, students had opportunities to talk with the representatives from various global organizations, hear from guest speakers, and attend multiple interactive events, including the Taste of Nations and a Virtual Reality experience with Compassion International.
