Liberty commits to aiding the Bahamas in wake of Hurricane Dorian

In response to the recent damage and loss in the Bahamas caused by Hurricane Dorian, Liberty University announced during Wednesday’s Convocation the multiple ways through which it plans to use its resources to help the nation.

At the beginning of Convocation, Senior Vice President for Spiritual Development David Nasser invited a group of residential students who call the Bahamas home to join him on the stage. He asked for prayers for the group and for their families. Nasser announced that President Jerry Falwell has approved a $25,000 donation to Camp Bahamas ministries to dispense to those affected by this storm, and a team from LU Send Now, Liberty’s disaster relief initiative, will be dispatched to serve the victims directly.

Camp Bahamas is a Christian youth camp in the Bahamas that also orchestrates mission opportunities. According to Nasser, the majority of the LU Send Now team will be comprised of Liberty students from the Bahamas so that they can reunite with their families and serve their homeland.

Liberty will also coordinate with the local relief organization Gleaning for the World and with Thomas Road Baptist Church in their recovery and outreach efforts.

Nasser urged the student body to pray for their Bahamian classmates in the midst of this tragedy.

“Pray for them that they would find peace despite the circumstances and uncertainty, and pray that they would find a hope and be grounded by their faith,” Nasser said.

As of Convocation, Nasser said seven people have lost their lives in the Bahamas, but there are estimations of the death toll rising to 100. Nasser said he met with the Bahamian students on Tuesday and at that time, one student did not know where his mother was, but he received positive news Wednesday morning that she had been located.

A Bahamian student, Alexis Ferguson, was chosen to lead a prayer for those affected from her country.

“I pray for peace for the people who saw their homes literally blown away before their eyes, peace for everyone who has seen their loved ones taken away by the current of the floods … peace for the people who don’t know where their family is, and peace for the people who are literally trapped under rocks and rubble screaming for help,” Alexis said. “I pray for love because there is no amount of wind or rain that can wash out the power of people coming together in times of hurt and pain.”
