Dr. Michael Jones and his wife, Dr. Laura Jones, are long-time LU professors who have been very successful at combining advanced research in their fields with ministry, especially missionary ministry. During this presentation Dr. Michael Jones will tell the story of how God led them to a life that combines fun, adventure, academics, and missions, dividing their time between Lynchburg and Romania and loving it. Torn between the desire to be university professors, on the one hand, and missionaries on the other, God has shown them that sometimes you actually can have your cake and eat it, too! Come hear this talk about overseas travel, raising kids in a third culture, developing contacts at foreign universities, publishing in a foreign language, and more!

Speaker Biography

Dr. Michael Jones is a philosophy professor, an author, and a two-time Fulbright scholar. He has taught in the U.S. and Romania, and he is currently working on translating Romanian philosophy into English for publication in the U.S. In Romania, he has taught at the University of Bucharest and Babeş-Bolyai University, which are Romania’s leading universities, and he has also spoken at several other universities around the country. Although he usually teaches in English, he is fluent in Romanian. His trips to Romania are not purely academic: these speaking engagements and teaching opportunities give him and his wife the chance to minister, which is very important to them. They have collaborated with churches in the capital and other urban centers, but they have also worked with small, rural churches. From 2016 to 2019, they led LU Send teams to Romania, ministering in churches all over the eastern side of the country.
