Inaugural Class Achieves Phenomenal 89 Percent National Bar Passage Rate
November 08, 2007
Liberty University School of Law is pleased to announce that its inaugural class of May 2007 has achieved an outstanding 89% national pass rate on the bar exam. Liberty's success on the bar exam places the law school in the top 20 percent of all ABA-approved law schools in the country with respect to bar passage rates. The law school’s first graduates took the bar exam in 16 states.
It is not unusual for a new law school to have a bar passage rate in the 30 to 40 percent range. A milestone in the history of a law school is when it reaches a bar passage rate of 70 percent. In Virginia, the overall passage rate for all law schools was 71.97%. Liberty’s 89 percent bar passage rate is a phenomenal achievement for the school, which opened in August 2004. Liberty University School of Law is part of Liberty University, which was founded by the late Dr. Jerry Falwell. Jerry Falwell, Jr., who is also an accomplished attorney, serves as the university’s Chancellor and CEO.
In addition to providing a unique legal education grounded in the Western legal tradition and the Christian worldview, Liberty’s lawyering skills program is the most comprehensive in the country. This program combines the theory of law with the skills of law and provides a better foundation for legal education. Judges from state supreme and appellate courts and federal courts, who judged Liberty’s moot court competition, have commented that Liberty’s moot court performance ranks at the top of all law schools.
Students at Liberty have the opportunity to participate in many externship opportunities in law school. Some opportunities include real-life experience with judges, prosecutors, public defenders, legislators and policymakers, and business and corporate leaders. Students interested in public interest constitutional law may gain experience with Liberty Counsel while working on cases that set national precedent.
Liberty’s law school is housed in state-of-the-art facilities on the campus of Liberty University, in historic Virginia situated near the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The law school recently dedicated its one-of-a-kind Supreme Courtroom. The central area of the courtroom is patterned after the United States Supreme Court and has a replica of the Court’s nine-member bench.
Mathew D. Staver, Dean of Liberty University School of Law and Founder of Liberty Counsel, commented on Liberty’s accomplishment: “Liberty University School of Law provides a superior legal education in fidelity to the Christian faith. Liberty is training a new generation of lawyers, judges, policymakers, and world leaders. The law school has a great future, and the recent bar passage success is a good indicator of Liberty’s unparalleled legal education program.”
