University leaders named to provost and online provost roles

February 26, 2019

Liberty University recently appointed Dr. Scott Hicks (left) as university provost for its residential programs. Dr. Shawn Akers (right) was named to the new position of online provost, overseeing the online programs.

Hicks first served at Liberty as an assistant professor in 2007. He was named dean of the School of Business in 2012 and vice provost of graduate education in 2017 before serving as interim provost. Prior to Liberty, Hicks spent several years in the oil industry and served as director of retail operations for Mansfield Oil Company, one of America’s largest Forbes 400 companies.

Liberty President Jerry Falwell said Hicks has used his background in the business world to guide today’s college students. “Dr. Hicks has a heart for our students and cares about preparing them not only for graduation, but also for successful, long-term careers. He knows how to develop academic programs that match the demands of the job market and, most importantly, he understands our mission as a leader in Christian higher education.”

Akers has served as vice provost since June and was dean of the Helms School of Government from 2010 to 2018. He started his time at Liberty over a decade ago at the School of Law, where he continues to serve as an adjunct professor. Akers spent several years working as an attorney and practiced law in Louisiana at the state and federal levels, including the Louisiana Supreme Court.

“We are proud to welcome Shawn Akers to this new role,” Falwell said. “Liberty University remains a world leader in online education, and as our programs continue to grow and meet the needs of an adult population, we will rely on the professional experience and outstanding leadership of Akers and his staff.”
Hicks and Akers will collaborate to develop and implement the vision and values of the university across all academic disciplines.
