New student club attracts leading national security voices to campus

February 26, 2019

In just its first academic year on campus, Liberty University’s Alexander Hamilton Society (AHS) chapter is already making waves. AHS is a nonpartisan, nationally recognized organization that promotes the understanding of national security, foreign policy, and economic statecraft among students.

During the Fall 2018 semester, AHS brought two high-profile national security experts to campus: former military interrogator U.S. Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox (on Nov. 12), who played a direct role in the capture of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and Dr. Michael Rubin (Sept. 26), a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who spent his career fighting terrorism. Both speakers were featured guests at Convocation and also spent time meeting with club members.

The chapter also welcomed Dr. Peter Brookes, a senior research fellow in weapons of mass destruction and counter proliferation at The Heritage Foundation’s Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy.

“I have been shocked in a good way at how receptive the administration has been,” said Jordan Hayley, founding president of Liberty’s AHS chapter. “I’m grateful for that and, specifically, for the Office of Spiritual Development being willing to partner with us and allow our speakers to have a broader audience.”

Hayley, who served as an AHS summer fellow last year, noted that the society’s connections have already helped three students secure internships.

The rapid success of Liberty’s chapter led to it being named Top Campus Chapter: Fall 2018 by the national society.
