The programs are funded by Medicaid, United Way and through a contract with Central Virginia Community Services. Volunteers are needed to work with individuals with disabilities in groups or one-on one in the following programs:

Camp Meadowlark - a four week summer camp for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Activities include arts and crafts, music, dance, games, swimming and outdoor sports. Camp is operational in the month of July, Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The Day Support Program - serves adults with intellectual disabilities to increase and maintain skills such as hygiene, self-care, independent living tasks, academics, recreation, socialization and behavioral skills. We also encourage community awareness and participation.

All volunteers must complete an application and agree to reference checks.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Students who volunteer with Special Olympics Virginia will be given the opportunity to interact with athletes who have intellectual disabilities. The volunteers will help to provide them with opportunities to participate in organized athletic events and practices. Volunteers will also be given the chance to help plan and organize various events throughout the Piedmont Region.
