Tutorial: Navigation Sets
*Please note: Only Web Manager users with Publisher permissions may create or edit navigation sets.
Imagine trying to find a recipe in a cookbook with no Table of Contents or Index - you'd quickly get frustrated. There's a similar situation with your web pages. No matter how good your content, users will lose patience if they cannot easily navigate through that content. Well-organized navigation sets are the backbone of your web pages.

When planning a navigation set, you may want to browse through your pages and write down the titles or the PIDs of the pages you want to include in the navigation set. Then you can organize them topically into smaller sub-sets and choose a short, descriptive title for the sub-set. (The sub-set title does not get linked; it is just a description of the sub-set.) Keep in mind as you plan that in general, people can process 6-8 items in a list before the list is too long and it becomes difficult to find any one item.

Once in Web Manager, navigation sets can be accessed two different ways. From the Main Page of Web Manager, click on the department name under "Dept Navigation" at the right side of the page:
Or, from any one of your department's pages, click on "Departmental Navigation" that appears in the Edit Page Properties box:
The next screen shows the different parent sets you have created for your department (see #2 below). It also allows you to create a new parent set (see #1 below):
If you were to click the "related links" set from the list of sets shown above, the next screen shows the navigation links for that parent set. Each link group has a editable title, and can be rearranged using the up and down arrows. Likewise, each link in that group is editable and can be ordered differently using the up and down arrows:
Clicking the "Add group" button will allow you to create a new sub-set of links within this navigation set. Give it a title and click save. Note, as seen below, that the link group will not be live until it contains at least one link. Display status is listed as "Inactive":
Once you've created the link group, you can add links to it by clicking the "Add link" button. Type in the text you want to display (see #1 below) and then set the link address.
There are four options for adding the link:
- Web Manager Page
Choose a page from your department's pages with the drop-down list.
- Custom Link
To link to a page outside my department, you need to visit that page and copy the address. Then switch from "Web Manager Page" to "Custom Link" and paste the address in the field.
Link to an email address by switching to "email" and entering the address after the "mailto:" text that displays.
- Uploaded File
Link to one of the files in your File Manager by switching to "Uploaded File" and choosing the desired file from the drop-down list.
The link will not be live unless you switch from "Inactive" to "Active" (see #2 below):

To display a naviation set on a page, check the "Display Departmental Navigation" box in the Page Properties when creating a page. Or, on a page that is already created, open Page Properties by clicking "Edit Page Properties" (as seen in the second graphic on this page) to access the "Display Departmental Navigation" check box.
You will also have the opportunity to choose which set you'd like displayed on that page, if your department has more than one:
