Writing Coaching for Residential Students

Great writers develop by discussing ideas and improving their writing together, and Residential Writing Services wants to help you succeed by working with you. Our peer coaches are highly trained to help you wherever you are in the writing process, regardless of your major. We offer one-on-one, in person appointments to current residential students. Online students should contact the Online Writing Center.

Schedule Appointments through LU Network

We use the LU Network scheduling system for appointments, which lets you schedule an appointment for a time and location that works best for you.

So that we can provide you with the best service possible, we ask that you make your appointment at least 12 hours in advance. Students may only make one appointment per day.

  • Writing Coaching Appointments

    Request Appointment

Specify your paper topic, paper length, and writing format under the prompt "What is the purpose of your appointment?"

When you come to your appointment, bring an unmarked copy of your paper, any research you have conducted, and your professor’s instructions/rubric.

Undergraduate Students: Appointments will start at the top of the hour and can be up to 45 minutes in length. Appointments for class credit must be at least 20 minutes in length.

Graduate Students: If possible, email a copy of what you have written to at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment. This early submission will help our coaches get a sense of your writing style and needs, especially for longer assignments. Appointments may be up to 1 hour in length.

  • Writing Lab

    Monday - Thursday | 5-9 p.m. | DeMoss Hall 1162

The Writing Lab is an additional form of assistance Writing Services provides for students seeking a quiet, low-pressure environment to work on their assignments at their own pace. Our lab encourages independent work, with the added convenience of a writing coach close by to answer any questions you may have as they arise. You are not required to reserve a slot to visit the Writing Lab, so you may drop in any time during our open hours. Please bring your own laptop and any relevant assignment materials.

While the Writing Lab is a beneficial service, it is not designed to replace one-on-one appointments or Writing Coaching visits for class credit. If you would like undivided attention to your writing, or if your class is requiring (or offering extra credit for) coming to visit us, please make an appointment through LU Network.

  • Services for Professors

Writing Services offers in-class presentations and other options to help orient your students in writing a paper, writing using specific formatting, and all our services. If you schedule a presentation with us, we'll send a trained presenter to your class in order to display a complete visual presentation and discuss the topic(s) of your choice.

    • Introduction to Writing Services. 5 min. presentation on our services and how we can improve any writer
    • Paper Writing-From Start to Finish. 20-50 min. presentation writing a great paper for an academic setting
    • Formatting an Academic Paper. 10-20 min. presentation formatting a paper for MLA, APA, or Turabian.
    • Writing Services for Credit. Create a program with the writing center in which your students can earn regular or extra credit for visiting us. We keep records of every visit to Writing Services and will be able to report to you which students visited us at which times at any point throughout the semester.
    • Borrow-a-Coach. Request assistance with a peer review in your class. Coaches are able to assist individual students in the classroom with content, logical flow, grammatical concepts, format, paragraph unity, structure, and more.
    • Resource Request. Request a specific resource for us to build and put on our website.
    • Special Training Event. Request a custom workshop. We support departments and classes with specially-tailored workshops on writing, formatting, and more.

If you are requesting a presentation, include the topic(s) of presentation, your class name, location, and preferred time. If you are requesting another service, please give us as much detail as possible.

In order to serve your students best, we ask that all professor requests be made at least a week in advance.
