Update for Fall 2018: Gate 2 Testing Requirements

Effective: 9/1/2018

Initial Licensure Gate 2 Requirements

(including Ed.S./Ed.D candidates seeking to add initial licensure to their program):

  • VCLA (Score: 470) and
  • Reading Assessment (Approved options included below) and
  • Mathematics Assessment (Approved options included below)

Reading Assessment Options

  • ACT - Reading (Score: 22)
  • SAT - Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing (Score: 580, taken Mar. 2016 or later)
  • Praxis Core - Reading - Test Code 5712 (Score: 168)
  • GRE - Verbal Reasoning (Score: 151)

Mathematics Assessment Options

  • ACT - Math (Score: 22)
  • SAT - Math (Score: 560, taken Mar. 2016 or later)
  • Praxis Core - Mathematics - Test Code 5732 (Score: 162)
  • GRE - Quantitative Reasoning (Score: 153)

Update for Fall 2018: Gate 3 Testing Requirements

Effective for all Spring 2019 student teachers/interns (those applying by the Gate 3 deadline of Sept. 1, 2018)

Official Passing Score Reports

All initial and advanced licensure candidates: Official passing score reports will be required for all licensure exams by the Gate 3 deadline.  Registration receipts will no longer be accepted for probationary status for any licensure exams.

Initial Licensure Gate 3 Requirements

(including Ed.S./Ed.D candidates seeking to add initial licensure to their program):

  • Praxis Subject Assessment (test code and passing score dependent on endorsement) and
  • RVE (Score: 157; elementary and special education candidates only) and
  • VCLA (Score: 470) and
  • Mathematics Assessment (Approved options included below)

Mathematics Assessment Options

  • ACT - Math (Score: 22)
  • SAT - Math (Score: 560, taken Mar. 2016 or later)
  • Praxis Core - Mathematics - Test Code 5732 (Score: 162)
  • GRE - Quantitative Reasoning (Score: 153)

Advanced Licensure Gate 3 Requirements for Reading Specialists

(including Ed.S./Ed.D candidates seeking to add advanced licensure to their program):

  • All Reading Specialist candidates are required to take and submit a passing score on the Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE): Reading Specialists (Test code: 5304). The minimum passing score is 162.
  • If you are applying for a license in another state, you may be required to take a different test for your state. However, you will need to pass the RVE to be admitted to the program at Gate 3.
