COUC 999 Internship

Counseling, Research, and Leadership Internships

Doctoral students are required to complete doctoral level Internships that total a minimum of 600 hours in three of the five CACREP doctoral competencies (teaching, supervision, counseling, research, and leadership/advocacy). All CES students are required to take Teaching Internship (COUC 970); Supervision Internship (COUC 980); and Internship (COUC 999). The focus of the internship (COUC 999) will be determined on the basis of the student's experience, training, and area of interest.

Doctoral students who are not licensed clinicians are required to register for the Counseling Internship. Only doctoral students who are licensed clinicians have the option to register for a research or leadership internship.

  • Spring 2019: December 3, 2018
  • Summer 2019: March 18, 2019
  • Fall 2019: July 22, 2019
  • Spring 2020: December 9, 2019


All approval documents must be submitted to the Ph.D. Internship office through the SharePoint submission portal prior to the deadline listed above. No late documents will be accepted without the permission of the Director of Clinical Training. Submission of the below forms does not mean automatic acceptance of the proposed site and/or supervisor; they must be approved first. Liberty University must validate the student's proposed site will provide a good educational experience and that it has adequate oversight and safeguards built in to ensure an appropriate clinical environment.

Program Policies 

  • The official start date for Internship is the first official day of the academic semester.
  • The Internship course offered is an A-Term course and is a full-semester commitment.  Students will remain with their Internship site and supervisor for the duration of the academic semester. The course is 15 weeks in Fall and Spring semesters and 14 weeks in Summer.
  • Students must complete a Background Check or Re-Check through Castle Branch as part of the internship application. Visit the Background Check website in the menu to the left for further instructions.

Requirements and Preparation

  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA by the posted application deadline                         
  • Complete Prerequisites:
    • All Students:
      • Advanced Theory Application (COUC 715)
      • Issues in Integration (COUC 730)
      • Advanced Research Design (COUC 740)
      • Advanced Multivariate Statistics & Quantitative Research (COUC 745)
      • Ph.D. Qualifying Exam (COUC 969)
      • Practicum (COUC 998)
    • Research Internship: Qualitative Research (COUC 750)
    • Leadership Internship: Documentation of qualifications specific to each project.
      • All pre-requisites courses are non-negotiable and must be successfully completed prior to the start of Internship.          
  • Find an Internship site and supervisor.
  • Due to the potential time required in locating a site and supervisor, students are encouraged to begin looking for a site and supervisor three to four months prior to the application submission deadline.
  • Submit all the required approval paperwork through the online submission portal by the application deadline.
  • After your documents have been approved, you will receive an official approval email with your approved start date for earning hours. Upon approval, the Internship Office will manually register you for the course.
    • Students enrolled in Counseling Internship will submit two different time preferences for WebEx Faculty Group Supervision. Our office will do our best to place each student in one of the two time preferences selected. Our office cannot guarantee a specific day and time WebEx Faculty Group Supervision will be held as this is determined by the professor during Week One.

Counseling Internship Application Process

  • Degree Completion Plan Audit (Located under Student Tab in ASIST)
  • Castle Branch Background Check Receipt (Background Check and FBI fingerprinting) or Re-Check Background Check Receipt
  • Supervisor's License Verification (Found on your state counseling board website; includes name, license number, issue date, expiration date, & current/active).
  • Fieldwork Contract (signed by the supervisor)
    • The Informed Consent and how the site maintains records will need to be submitted with a copy of the Fieldwork Contract for potential schools/church sites.

  • Supervisor & Site Information Form (signed by the site director, the supervisor, & the student)
  • On-Site Supervisor: an individual who is an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Internship.
  • Off-Site Supervisor: an individual who is not an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Internship, but has received approval to come on site and provide supervision.
  • Digital Photo of Student (Professional Photo, Driver's License, or Student ID ONLY)
  • Copy of Student Liability Insurance Face Sheet
  • Our office does not accept electronic signatures at this time

Affiliation Agreements

Student needs to submit completed Liberty University Affiliation Agreements or an Affiliation Agreement that is approved by Liberty University. Extensions will not be granted for Affiliation Agreement negotiations.

Changing/Adding Your Internship Site/Supervisor During a Semester

Students are allowed to switch site(s)/supervisor(s), add an additional site/supervisor, or drop a site/supervisor during their Internship experience. Review our policy below.

Students must follow the procedures laid out in the "Site and Supervisor Change Procedures" document(s) below.

Research and Leadership Internships

Doctoral students who are licensed clinicians have the option to register for a Research Internship or Leadership Internship. You will submit your request to apply for these internships using the submission portal by the application deadline. You will need the following paperwork: 

  • Copy of your current license to verify eligibility
  • Liability Insurance Face Sheet
  • Proposed Faculty Supervisor 
  • Proposed Focus of Internship 

Once you have completed the necessary steps, you will receive an email from to indicate that your request has been received.

Counseling Internship Sites

Below is a list of the types of sites that can typically be approved for Counseling Internships:

  • Counseling agency
  • Hospital
  • Private practice
  • University counseling center
  • Community services board
  • School*
  • Church**

*A potential school site must provide mental health services to elementary, middle, and/or high school-aged students. The site must use approved informed consent and maintain records of counseling sessions.

**A potential church site must be an established church counseling center/services that uses approved informed consent and maintains client records of counseling sessions.

Traditional site: A site offering traditional counseling services which address general population counseling needs of individuals, couples, and families.  A traditional site is one which is not limited in its scope of practice to a counseling specialization requiring certification standards. 

*If you own your own private practice, we do not approve non-traditional counseling services (i.e. intensives, adventure, equestrian, alternative therapies, etc.)

Approved Supervisors for Counseling Internships

Examples of Approved Supervisors

  • Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (from an accredited university)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Psychologist (LP) – a Psychologist that preferably earned a doctoral degree in Psychology (Psy.D.)
    • All others degrees are reviewed on a case by case by the Practicum/Internship Office
  • Psychiatrist

Examples of Supervisors Not Approved

  • Doctorate degrees that are not in the counseling field or are unaccredited
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) – with the only exception of the macro- or clinical- designations in the state of Michigan.
  • Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC)
  • Master of Divinity
  • Pastoral Counselors
  • School Counselors
  • Supervisors who are not licensed in the same state as the internship site.

Approved Supervisors for Research or Leadership Internships

  • Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (from an accredited university)
  • Ph.D. in a Counseling or Research related discipline
