  • Internship Prerequisites

    All prerequisite courses are non-negotiable and must be successfully completed prior to the start of the Internship

    • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA by the posted application deadline                          
    • Complete Prerequisites:
      • Orientation to Counselor Profession Identity & Function (CMHC 500)
      • Ethical & Legal Issues in Counseling (CMHC 501)
      • Human Growth & Development (CMHC 502)
        • Multicultural Counseling (CMHC 504)
      • Counseling Techniques & the Helping Relationship (CMHC 505)
      • Theories of Counseling (CMHC 510)
      • Group Counseling (CMHC 512)
      • Research & Program Evaluation (CMHC 515)
      • Assessment Techniques in Counseling (CMHC 521)
      • Career Development & Counseling (CMHC 522)
      • Psychopathology & Counseling (CMHC 646)
      • Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (CMHC 667)

        • Students enrolled in a degree completion plan prior to 2013-2014 or took COUN 501 before Fall 2013 will not be required to complete Orientation to Counselor Profession Identity & Function (CMHC 500) as a prerequisite to Counseling (CMHC 699).
        • Students may not enroll in Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (CMHC 667) and Counseling Internship (CMHC 699) in the same semester. You must successfully pass Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (CMHC 667) in order to enroll in Counseling Internship (CMHC 699).

    *International Graduate Students must receive approval for what is called “Curricular Practical Training” (CPT) for any internships, regardless of whether they are paid or unpaid. The CPT Document must be filled out with the Practicum & Internship office and submitted to the student’s International Student Advisor for approval.

  • Internship Hour and Semester Requirements

    Minimum Internship hours: 600

    Students should check with their State Counseling Board for Internship requirements specific to their state.

    Liberty University vs. your state comparison of requirements

    Semester Requirments:

    • Students enrolled on a 2016-2017 DCP to present, are required to take two consecutive semesters of Internship. Each semester is worth 3 credit hours.
    • Students enrolled on a 2015-2016 DCP and prior can choose to take one, two, or three consecutive semesters of Internship.
    • Internship officially starts the first day of Liberty’s academic semester.
      • Students' start date to begin logging Internship hours will be no earlier than the first official day of the academic semester
    • Internship is full-semester commitment.
      • Students are required to earn hours each week of the semester with the approved site and supervisor.

    (DCP = Degree Completion Plan)

    Internship is an A-Term Course:

    • 16-17 weeks during the Fall and Spring semesters
    • 14-15 weeks during the Summer semester.

    Video Recording Requirement:

    • For the purposes of faculty and site supervision, students must record two counseling sessions.
    • Students will submit a verbatim form:
      • 5-8 minute segment of the recorded session
      • Faculty will provide feedback on this portion of the session
    • The only devises students can use for recording are digital cameras or camcorders.
      • Phones, webcams, and tablets are prohibited.

    Live Observation:

    • If a site does not permit video/audio recording of client sessions, students may use Live Observation.
    • Sites that choose to use Live Observation:
      • Students must provide the Live Observation Form (located in Practicum manual) to their site supervisor to utilize during his/her observation.
    • Students utilizing Live Observation will also be required to record taped sessions with: Clients role-played by either site supervisor, a fellow student, or a licensed clinician.
    • These taped sessions will meet the video and verbatim requirements for faculty supervision. Email cmhcinternship@liberty.edu with any questions.
  • Internship Site Opportunities

    • State Site Lists
      • The State Site Lists are compiled of sites previously used by Liberty University students. Email cmhcinternship@liberty.edu  with any questions or concerns.
    • On average, finding a site and supervisor takes at least three to four months.
    • Students are allowed a maximum of two sites.
      • All students must apply with at least one site that will allow them to complete their required 2 Taped Client Sessions.

    Types of sites that can be considered for Internship:

    • Counseling Agency
    • Hospital
    • Private Practice
    • University Counseling Center
    • Community Services Board
    • School*
    • Church**

    *School Site Requirements:

    • Provide clinical mental health services to elementary, middle, and/or high school-aged students
    • Use approved Informed Consent
    • Store clinical counseling records of sessions

    **Church Site Requirements:

    • Have an established clinical counseling center and services
    • Use approved Informed Consent
    • Store clinical counseling records of sessions
    • Student must inform our office if they are a member of the potential church site
  • Internship Supervisor Information

     

    • Students are allowed a maximum of two supervisors
    • Discuss supervisor responsibility list with potential supervisors.
    • On-Site Supervisor: an individual who is an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Internship at.
    • Off-Site Supervisor: an individual who is not an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Internship at, but has received approval to come on site and provide supervision.

    Examples of Approved Supervisors:

    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
    • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
    • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
    • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    • Licensed Psychologist (LP) – a Psychologist that preferably earned a doctoral degree in Psychology (Psy. D.)
    • All others degrees are reviewed case by case by the Practicum/Internship Office
    • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (from an accredited university)
    • Psychiatrist

    Examples of Supervisors Not Approved:

    • Doctorate degrees that are not in the counseling field or are unaccredited
    • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) – with the only exception of the macro- or clinical- designations in the state of Michigan.
    • Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC)
    • Master of Divinity
    • Pastoral Counselors
    • School Counselors
    • Supervisors who are not licensed in the same state as the practicum site.
  • Internship Application Documents

    3. Supervisor's License Verification
      • Found on your state counseling board website.
      • includes name, license number, issue date, expiration date, & current/active
    4. Fieldwork Contract
    5. Supervisor & Site Information Forms
    6. Digital Photo of Student
      • Professional Photo, Driver's License, or Student ID
    7. Liability Insurance Face Sheet
      • Students are required to purchase their own coverage for the duration of Practicum and Internship.

    8. Affiliation Agreement
      • Cover Page: Completed by site representative
      • Agreement: Completed and signed only by legal signatory at site
      • Schedule A (Student Addendum): Completed and signed by student
        • Review guidelines and instructions
        • Extensions will not be granted for Affiliation Agreement negotiations

    Important:

    • The Practicum and Internship Office does not accept electronic signatures on any approval documents, other than the Affiliation Agreement.
    • The informed consent and how the site maintains records will need to be submitted with a copy of the Fieldwork Contract for potential school or church sites.

    All approval documents must be submitted to the Practicum and Internship Office through the SharePoint submission portal prior to the deadline listed above. No late documents will be accepted. Submission of the below forms does not mean automatic acceptance of the proposed site and/or supervisor; they must be approved first. Liberty University must validate that the student's proposed site will provide a good educational experience and that it has adequate oversight and safeguards built in to ensure an appropriate clinical environment.

  • Changing Site and/or Supervisor

    Students are allowed to switch site(s) or supervisor(s), add an additional site/supervisor, or drop a site/supervisor during their Internship experience. Review our policy below.

    Disclaimer: If there is a change in the Site Director, our office will only need an updated Site Information Form with the new individual’s name and title. You will need to submit the updated Site Information Form via email to cmhcinternship@liberty.edu.
