Application Deadlines

Fall 2018 Internship application deadline has passed.

Upcoming internship application deadlines:

  • Spring 2019: December 3, 2018
  • Summer 2019: March 18, 2019
  • Fall 2019: July 22, 2019
  • Spring 2020: December 9, 2019

All students must apply with at least one site that will allow them to complete their required 2 Taped Client Sessions.

The Practicum/Internship Office offers state lists, for each state. These lists are compiled of sites previously used by Liberty students. If you would like a copy of a state site list sent to you, please email your request to, with the state you would like a state site list for.

Below is a list of the types of sites that can typically be approved for practicum fieldwork:

  • Counseling agency
  • Hospital
  • Private practice
  • University counseling center
  • Community services board
  • School*
  • Church**

*A potential school site must provide mental health services to elementary, middle, and/or high school-aged students. The site must use approved informed consent and maintain records of counseling sessions.

Program Information

  • Students' start date to begin logging internship hours will be no earlier than the first official day of the academic semester.
  • The Counseling Internship (CMHC 699) internship course is a full-semester commitment. Students will remain with their internship site and supervisor for the duration of the academic semester. 
  • Students enrolled on a 2016-2017 DCP forward, please note the Internship is split into 2 required semesters worth 3 credit hours each. Students enrolled on a 2016-2017 DCP or prior will be permitted to enroll in 3 consecutive semesters of Internship.

  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA by the posted application deadline

    • Human Growth & Development (CMHC 502)
    • Multicultural Counseling (CMHC 504)
    • Counseling Techniques & the Helping Relationship (CMHC 505)
    • Theories of Counseling (CMHC 510)
    • Group Counseling (CMHC 512)
    • Research & Program Evaluation (CMHC 515)
    • Assessment Techniques in Counseling (CMHC 521)
    • Career Development & Counseling (CMHC 522)
    • Psychopathology & Counseling (CMHC 646)
    • Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (CMHC 667)
    • Counseling Practicum (CMHC 698)
    • Note: Students enrolled in a degree completion plan prior to 2013-2014 or took COUN 501 before Fall 2013 will not be required to complete Orientation to Counselor Profession Identity & Function (CMHC 500) as a prerequisite to Counseling (CMHC 699).
  • *Students may not enroll in Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (CMHC 667) and Counseling Internship (CMHC 699) in the same semester. You must successfully pass Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (CMHC 667) in order to enroll in Counseling Internship (CMHC 699).
  • Find an internship site and supervisor  
    • Supervisor Responsibility list
    • Due to the potential time required in locating a site and supervisor, students are encouraged to begin looking for a site and supervisor 3-4 months prior to the application submission deadline set by the practicum/internship office.
  • The practicum/internship office offers a site list for the state of Virginia. This list is compiled of sites and supervisors previously used by Liberty students. If you would like a copy of the state site list sent to you, please email your request to
  • After your documents have been approved, you will receive an official approval email with your start date for earning hours. The Internship Office will register you for the course. 
  • Please note that the Counseling Internship (CMHC 699) course is approximately 17 weeks in the fall and spring semesters and 15 weeks in summer. 
  • Liberty University vs. your state comparison of requirements

*International Graduate Students must receive approval for what is called “Curricular Practical Training” (CPT) for any internships, regardless of whether they are paid or unpaid. The CPT Document must be filled out with the Practicum & Internship office and submitted to the student’s International Student Advisor for approval.

Changing/Adding Your Internship Site/Supervisor During a Semester

Students are allowed to switch site(s)/supervisor(s), add an additional site/supervisor, or drop a site/supervisor during their Internship experience. Please review our policy below.

Disclaimer: If there is a change in the Site Director that is listed on the Site Information Form, our office will only need an updated Site Information Form with the new individual’s name and title. You will need to submit the updated Site Information Form via email to

Approved Supervisors for Internship

Examples of Approved Supervisors

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Psychologist (LP) – a Psychologist that preferably earned a doctoral degree in Psychology (Psy. D.)
    • All other degrees are reviewed on a case by case by the Practicum/Internship Office
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (from an accredited university)
  • Psychiatrist

Examples of Supervisors Not Approved

  • Doctorate degrees that are not in the counseling field or are unaccredited
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) – with the only exception of the macro- or clinical- designations in the state of Michigan.
  • Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC)
  • Master of Divinity
  • Pastoral Counselors
  • School Counselors
  • Supervisors who are not licensed in the same state as the practicum site.
