The Liberty University Debate Team develops the critical thinking and verbal communication talents of its members so they can apply these skills at the highest level of national intercollegiate debate competition. The team seeks to equip its members for kingdom service in every field so that God’s name may be glorified to the ends of the earth.
The Liberty University Debate Team participates in intercollegiate policy debate. We participate in tournaments sanctioned by three national debate organizations: the American Debate Association, the Cross Examination Debate Association, and the National Debate Tournament. We debate the topic and resolution voted upon by member schools of the Cross Examination Debate Association. Intercollegiate policy debate emphasizes research, rapid integration and assimilation of information, and speaking quickly.
After being an active member of the debate team from 2004-2006, Kirsten Porter-Stransky earned a B.S. in Psychology from Sweet Briar College and a Ph.D. in Biopsychology from the University of Michigan. Currently, she is a postdoctoral fellow at Emory University in a neuroscience laboratory researching the neurobiological basis of motivated behaviors for natural rewards as well as drugs of abuse.
“Debate taught me how to research a new topic, strengthened my critical thinking skills, and taught me how to form proper arguments."
