The Starting 5 – Liberty’s Top Storylines

• Liberty (1-0) will continue its season-opening homestand on Saturday, welcoming MAC preseason favorite Ohio (0-1) to Liberty Arena.

• Liberty is 4-2 all-time against MAC opponents, but one of those losses came at Ohio in the 2020-21 season opener. Ohio is the first MAC team to play in Lynchburg in 25 years (Akron - Dec. 7, 1996).

• The Lady Flames are 13-0 at Liberty Arena and have won 18 straight home games overall. That is the fourth-longest home winning streak in program history and the sixth-longest active streak in NCAA Division I women's basketball.

• Ohio native Bridgette Rettstatt paced the Lady Flames with 13 points and a career-high three triples during Tuesday's 89-40 season-opening win over Belmont Abbey. She had 13 points and five assists at Ohio last season.

• Liberty's other Ohio native, freshman Emma Hess, scored 11 points and knocked down a trio of three-pointers in her collegiate debut on Tuesday. That was part of a 51-point effort by Liberty's bench players.

Notes and Anecdotes – Liberty vs. Ohio

• Both Liberty and Ohio are expected to be among the top teams in their respective conferences. Liberty was picked second in the ASUN by the media and third by the coaches. Meanwhile, the MAC coaches tabbed Ohio as the preseason conference favorite.

• Liberty is seeking its first 2-0 start to a season since 2015-16. After losing its season opener at Notre Dame, Ohio is aiming to avoid its first 0-2 start since 2009-10.

• The Lady Flames will try to hold Ohio's CeCe Hooks in check. Hooks leads active NCAA Division I players in points (2,218) and steals (415). Last season, Hooks had 18 points and a pair of steals against Liberty.

• Liberty has two Ohio natives on its 2021-22 roster in Bridgette Rettstatt and Emma Hess. They were the Lady Flames' two leading scorers vs. Belmont Abbey on Tuesday.

• Ohio is the first team from the Buckeye State to play in Lynchburg since Cedarville on Dec. 13, 1997.

• Ohio Head Coach Bob Boldon was head coach at Lambuth in 2008-09, during the same time Liberty Football Head Coach Hugh Freeze was serving as Lambuth's head football coach. Boldon also spent one year (2001-02) as an assistant coach at Gannon. Lady Flames assistant Andy Bloodworth joined Gannon's coaching staff the following year.

Liberty vs. MAC

• Liberty is 4-2 all-time versus MAC opponents, including 1-0 vs. Akron, 1-0 vs. Ball State, 1-0 vs. Buffalo, 1-1 vs. Miami (Ohio) and 0-1 vs. Ohio.

• Liberty is facing a MAC team for the third straight season. The Lady Flames topped Miami (Ohio) 65-53 on Nov. 29, 2019 and lost 76-72 at Ohio on Nov. 25, 2020. Liberty will also meet Bowling Green on Nov. 28 at the Navy Classic.

• Ohio is the first MAC team to visit Lynchburg in 25 years. Liberty defeated Akron 96-90 on Dec. 7, 1996 during the Lady Flames Classic at the Vines Center. Elena Kisseleva scored 38 points for Liberty.

Home Sweet Home

• Liberty is 13-0 at Liberty Arena and has won 18 consecutive home games overall, beginning with a 76-66 victory over Kennesaw State at the Vines Center, Feb. 3, 2020.

• This is the fourth-longest home winning streak in program history. Liberty won a program-record 24 consecutive home games between Dec. 21, 2002 and Nov. 19, 2004.

• Through Tuesday, Liberty owns the sixth-longest active home winning streak in NCAA Division I women's basketball, trailing only Gonzaga (25), Stephen F. Austin (25), Maryland (24), Jackson State (19) and Princeton (19).

• The Flames have not lost a men's or women's basketball game at Liberty Arena through 26 contests (entering Thursday's MBB opener), as the Liberty men's basketball squad was 13-0 at home last season.

• Liberty men's and women's basketball have combined to win 38 straight home games, dating back to the men's team's 61-46 triumph over FGCU, Feb. 1, 2020 at the Vines Center.
