Liberty’s Top Storylines
• Liberty (1-1) will close out its three-game season-opening homestand on Thursday by hosting in-state foe Hampton (2-0).
• Hampton leads the all-time head-to-head series, 11-8. However, the Lady Flames have won eight straight meetings with the Lady Pirates, dating back to 1996. Liberty has topped Hampton during each of the last three seasons by an average of 22.0 ppg.
• Liberty is allowing only 55.0 ppg this season, while Hampton has racked up 88.5 ppg during two straight victories to tip off 2022-23.
• Mya Berkman fashioned her first double-double of the season and the eighth of her career (19 points, 11 rebounds) during a 69-41 home win over Salem, last Thursday. She led all players with 19 points during Liberty’s 68-48 win at Hampton last season and is just 53 points away from 1,000 for her career.
• Emma Hess has totaled four three-pointers during her first two appearances in the starting lineup, including three during the first quarter of last Thursday’s victory over Salem. She hit a pair of triples as part of an eight-point, five-rebound effort at Hampton a year ago as a freshman.
Notes and Anecdotes – Liberty vs. Hampton
• Liberty and Hampton will meet for the 20th time on Thursday. The Lady Pirates won the first 11 head-to-head matchups, but Liberty has taken each of the last eight meetings, following Hampton’s most recent victory on Jan. 11, 1996.
• This is the fourth straight season Liberty and Hampton are squaring off on the hardwood. The Lady Flames have won the last three meetings by an average of 22.0 ppg.
• Hampton is the first non-conference opponent to visit Liberty Arena twice. The Lady Flames topped the Lady Pirates, 67-45, Dec. 9, 2020, in their second home game at the new facility.
• Hampton is in its first season of CAA play after four years in the Big South. The Lady Pirates were picked to tie for 10th in the conference standings this season.
• The Lady Pirates are 2-0 for the first time since 2019-20, averaging 88.5 ppg in home wins over Mid-Atlantic Christian and Delaware State.
• Carey Green has taken Liberty to the NCAA Tournament 14 times in his first 23 seasons as head coach. The Lady Flames are seeking their first NCAA bid since 2018. Meanwhile, David Six has coached Hampton to the NCAA Tournament six times in 13 years, but the Lady Pirates have not been there since 2017.
Liberty vs. CAA
• Liberty is 20-40 all-time versus Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents, including 16-18 under Carey Green.
• The Lady Flames posted a 66-61 (OT) victory over James Madison at Liberty Arena on Nov. 18, 2021, snapping a five-game losing streak against CAA foes.
• Liberty’s last six CAA matchups have come against James Madison, which has now moved to the Sun Belt. The last CAA opponent the Lady Flames faced other than JMU was Elon. Liberty defeated the Phoenix, 72-63, on Nov. 16, 2015 at the Vines Center.
• The Lady Flames will be facing a CAA opponent for the 24th season out of the last 25. The lone exception was the 2020-21 campaign.
