Vincent and Thomas Take VaSID All-State Top Honors
Liberty’s Kieran Vincent and Jeff Thomas took home top honors from the 2021 VaSID All-State University Division Men’s Golf team announced earlier today.
Vincent was named the 2021 VaSID Golfer of the Year, while Thomas was selected the 2021 VaSID Coach of the Year as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
Additionally, Liberty placed four players on the VaSID all-state teams. Vincnet was joined on the first-team listing by teammates Alexandre Fuchs and Jonathan Yaun. Ervin Chang rounded out Liberty’s honorees with his all-state second team listing.
Vincent is the second golfer in program history to be named the VaSID Golfer of the Year. Yaun took home the honors in 2020.
Vincent was ranked as high as No. 6 in the Golfstat individual national rankings (April 21 rankings), the highest individual ranking in Liberty’s program history. He is the program’s first-ever player to be named to the Fred Haskins Award watch list (top collegiate golfer in the country) and he set a new school record with a 70.48 season stroke average.
The native of Harare, Zimbabwe finished top 10 in seven out of nine events during the spring season and he played 66.7 percent of his rounds at par or better (18-of-27). Vincent was named to the 2021 Golfweek All-America third team and the 2021 GCAA/PING All-Region team.
Thomas guided Liberty to its highest national ranking in program history when the Flames were ranked No. 13 by Golfstat in April. Liberty finished top five in each of its eight team events leading up to the national championship.
The Flames won their first ASUN Conference this season and their sixth conference titles since 2011. Liberty made its third appearance at the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship where they finished in 21st place.
Fuchs ended the season with a career-best 71.93 season stroke average. He claimed his second career individual medalist honor earlier this year (Seminole Intercollegiate), making him one of seven players in program history to win multiple Division I events during their careers.
Yaun ranked second on Liberty’s roster with a 71.59 season stroke average in 2021, including three top-10 finishes. He played 17-of-27 rounds at par or better during the 2021 Spring season (63.0 percent).
Chang finished up his Liberty career having played in 143 career rounds, the third most by any player in program history (Isaiah Logue: 152 [2014-18]; Gabe Lench: 147 [2015-19]). He also finishes his career with a 72.55 stroke average, which ranks fifth best in program history.
