ASUN Release

Mia Toscano of the Liberty lacrosse team has been selected as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career.

Toscano’s recognition in the final ASUN weekly awards of the 2022 season comes after the senior paced Liberty with four caused turnovers and added a ground ball, one goal and three draw controls in a 16-7 road win at Kennesaw State in the regular season finale, last Saturday.

Toscano has received five ASUN Weekly accolades during her career, four defensive player of the week honors and one player of the week award. This is Toscano’s second ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season (also March 29).

The Venetia, Pa. native is one of only two players in the conference with multiple defensive player of the week awards this spring, joining Jacksonville’s Claire Martell. Liberty featured six weekly award winners during the regular season, four defensive player of the week honorees and two player of the week recipients.

Toscano’s efforts in Saturday’s win at KSU helped Liberty secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming ASUN Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The Lady Flames scooped up 24 ground balls in the game and generated 15 caused turnovers. The No. 2 seed Lady Flames will face the No. 3 seed Owls in Thursday’s semifinal round in what will be the second meeting between the two squads in six days. Game time is 4 p.m. from Jacksonville’s Rock Stadium.

Toscano closed out the regular season with 41 ground balls, good for second most on the team, and ranks 35th in the country in ground balls per game (2.56). Toscano and Liberty rank fourth nationally in ground balls per game (20.65) as a team. The senior midfielder is third on the team with 24 caused turnovers and is No. 35 in the nation in caused turnovers per game (1.50).
