Five birdies on their last par-5 hole of the day allowed Liberty to move up the leaderboard during round two of the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate on Saturday.

All five players in the Flames’ starting five posted a birdie on the par-5, No. 6 hole (460 yards), giving Liberty the best round of the day on Saturday.

The Flames paced the 20-team field with a 9-under par 275 as the teams faced the Ka‘anapali Golf Club – Royal Ka‘anapali Course (par 71, 6,700 yards) for the second time.

The 9-under par 275 allowed the Flames to climb up the leaderboard six spots into fourth place heading into tomorrow’s final round with an overall 13-under par 555 (280-275).

The Flames enter round three nine shots behind No. 11 Oklahoma, who leads the field with a 22-under par 546 (268-278).

The Flames continue to be led by Josh Ryan who is in third place with an overall 9-under 133 (65-68). The freshman has now carded three-straight sub-70 rounds and five total this fall.

All five of Liberty’s starting golfers posted scores in red figures during Saturday’s round: 3 Ryan (-3/68), T18 Austin Barbin (-1/70), T34 Jonathan Yaun (-2/69), T42 Connor Polender (-3/68) and T68 Isaac Simmons (-1/70).

Polender’s closing nine holes included a pair of birdies and a hole-out eagle on the par-4, No. 5 hole (474 yards), allowing him to match his low round of the season.

The 20-team field will return to the Ka‘anapali Golf Club at 8 a.m. HST, Sunday morning, to begin play during the final round of the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate.
