Stetson Wins 5-Set Marathon at Liberty

11/7/2021 5:00:43 PM | Women's Volleyball

For the second time this season, Liberty and Stetson battled through five sets, with the Hatters emerging with a 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 25-14, 20-18) win, Sunday at Liberty Arena.

Stetson (13-14, 8-7 ASUN) clinched the fourth seed in the ASUN East Division for the 2021 ASUN Volleyball Championship with its second five-set win over Liberty this season. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames (9-12, 5-9) will finish fifth in ASUN East Division standings and have earned a berth in the ASUN Volleyball Championship by virtue of head-to-head tiebreakers with ASUN West Division teams. Full seeding and matchups will be determined following the conclusion of the regular season, next weekend.

Liberty honored its six seniors – Lilly Kruse, Amelia Preston, Sarah Shanton, Aspen Thompson, Saige Weaver and Amaya Williams. Kruse, Shanton, Thompson and Williams all started this afternoon.

Notable Numbers

• Stetson outhit Liberty .196-.108 for the match. The Lady Flames led in kills (68-59), but Liberty had twice as many attack errors (44-22) as Stetson. The visitors won the digs battle (95-92) and the blocks battle (15.5-12.5), while the hosts led 7-4 in aces.

• Anabelle Standish (17 kills, 14 digs), Nyah Molina (46 assists, 21 digs) and Elena Djokovic (10 kills, 16 digs) all recorded double-doubles for the Hatters, while Kaylee Oscarson totaled 14 kills (.414) and six blocks. Alejandra Perez collected a match-high 24 digs, while Kennedy Muldrow posted six blocks.

• Trinity Watts led all players with 19 kills. Three Lady Flames finished with double-doubles, in Kate Phillips (18 kills, 17 digs, five blocks), Amaya Williams (match-high 52 assists, 23 digs) and Lydia Burts (12 kills, career-high 10 blocks). Lindsey Hardesty collected 22 digs, while Lilly Kruse scored 10 kills.

Turning Point

• Stetson won the opening set 25-20, outhitting the Lady Flames .263-.111. In set two, Stetson fought off two set-point tries before Kate Phillips scored the final two kills for a 26-24 Liberty win.

• Liberty took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-20 win in set three, but Stetson sent the match to a fifth set by winning set four, 25-14.

• The Lady Flames came out on fire to start set five, leading 11-5 when Lydia Burts sent down a kill. With Liberty leading 12-7, Stetson went on a 6-1 run to tie it at 13-13. The teams went back and forth, as Liberty and Stetson both ended up with three match-point tries. The hosts led 18-17 after a Burts-Phillips block. However, three unanswered Hatter points gave the match to the visitors.

Quick Hits

• Liberty leads Stetson 6-3 all-time, with all three of the Hatters’ wins over the Lady Flames coming in five sets. That includes this year’s five-setter on Oct. 8 in DeLand, Fla.

• The Lady Flames are 9-4 in sets decided by exactly two points this season and 4-2 in extended sets.

• The Lady Flames have posted 10 double-digit block matches this season.

• Lydia Burts is the fifth Liberty player in rally-scoring history, and second this season (also Aspen Thompson Sept. 3 vs. Duquesne) with a kills-blocks double-double. This is also the first year in rally-score history that three Lady Flames (Burts, Thompson, Madison Blane) posted at least one 10-block match.

• Burts is one of a program-record nine Lady Flames to record a double-double this season.

• Williams’ 23 digs today were the most by a Liberty setter since Caila Stapleton collected 25 digs against Radford, Sept. 26, 2014.

• Today was the first time since Nov. 11, 2017 (Margaret Latchford and Gabrielle Vess) that two Lady Flames recorded 20 or more digs in the same match.

• Liberty’s 92 digs today were its most since posting 94 digs at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 11, 2017.
