Liberty’s top three finishes on day one of the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet all came in the men’s shot put. Kevin Nedrick led the way with an 18th-place showing in the event, Wednesday at Indiana’s Robert C. Haugh Complex.

The ASUN shot put champion, Nedrick reached a season-best 60-7.25 on his third and final attempt to place 18th in the competition and first among the ASUN’s five entrants in the event. Nedrick also moved up to No. 4 on Liberty’s all-time list, meaning that four of the top five shot putters in program history are part of this year’s team.

Shot put program record holder and All-American Kyle Mitchell closed out his stellar collegiate career with a 20th-place showing on Wednesday. He reached 60-0.25 on what turned out to be the very final attempt of the day’s last event to conclude.

Warren Barrett’s season-best 59-11 effort was good for 22nd place, giving the Flames a trio of shot putters in the top half of the 48-member field.

Liberty’s other two field event athletes also finished in the top half of their respective events on Wednesday. John Hicks heaved the hammer 207-1 for 23rd place, while Quinten Clay long jumped 24-0.25 into a 2.4 m/s headwind for 24th place.

On the track, none of Liberty’s five athletes were able to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round. Diamantae Griffin was the closest to doing so. His 200 time of 20.83 left him two places and five hundredths of a second away from moving on.
