Shaw Named CCSA Swimmer of the Week

1/10/2023 12:31:10 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving

After a standout weekend in helping Liberty defeat East Carolina, junior Abbie Shaw has been named Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

This is Shaw’s second career CCSA Swimmer of the Week honor, coming nearly one year to the day of her first career award. The Niwot, Colo., native was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 11, 2022.

Shaw is the second Liberty athlete to be voted CCSA Swimmer of the Week this season, joining fellow junior Chloe Harris (Nov. 1).

Shaw continued her backstroke dominance, helping Liberty to a 156-144 win at ECU by sweeping the 100 backstroke (55.05) and 200 backstroke (2:02.02) and swimming on two winning relays. Shaw won the 100 backstroke by 1.08 seconds and won the 200 backstroke by 2:06 seconds over her nearest competitor. She led off Liberty’s winning 200 medley relay in 26.21, giving her team a .61 lead in a race that the Lady Flames won by .73 seconds (1:44.41 to 1:45.14). She swam the third leg on Liberty’s winning 400 free relay to end the meet.

The junior has earned victory in both the 100 and 200 backstroke at the same meet three times this season. Shaw holds the top time in the CCSA in the 50 backstroke (25.19) and 100 backstroke (52.94) so far in the 2022-23 campaign.

Liberty will host meets each of the next two weekends, beginning this Friday at 5 p.m. when the Lady Flames welcome VMI to the Liberty Natatorium.
