For the second year in a row, Liberty’s Thomas Sargeant has been honored for his hard work in the classroom.
The redshirt senior has been named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team®, which was announced on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
With his selection, Sargeant moves onto the national ballot where he will be eligible for selection to the CoSDIA Academic All-America® Team. The 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Football Team will be announced on Dec. 15.
Liberty has had at least one football player selected Academic All-District® first team each of the last six years, including Sargeant in 2020, and 10 of the last 11 years.
Liberty has had 12 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Football Team selections in program history, including long snapper Hunter Winstead earning first-team honors in 2017.
Sargeant has been the Flames’ “Iron Man” since gaining a scholarship prior to the start of the 2017 season. After redshirting in 2016, Sargeant has started every game at center for the Flames since the beginning of the 2017 season (currently 57 consecutive games).
Last season, the native of Mechanicsville, Va., was named to the 2020 Rimington Award watch list (top center in college football). Earlier this season, Sargeant was named a semifinalist for the 2021 Burlsworth Trophy, an award that honors the most outstanding football player in the country who began his career as a walk-on.
In 2020, Sargeant also earned VaSID All-State first team and Phil Steele Postseason All-Independent first team honors.
